Colombia: Taxi strike, protests planned in Barranquilla June 11
Taxi drivers plan to strike, protest in Barranquilla, Colombia, June 11. Transport disruptions likely, clashes possible.
Taxi drivers plan to strike and protest in Barranquilla from 05:00 on June 11 to demand local authorities regulate private transport services. Organizers plan to block some main roads in the city, including those leading to the Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAQ). Protesters will also gather on Avenida Circunvalar in the Las Flores area, at the roundabout of Calle 17 in the Simon Bolivar area, as well as at the intersections of Avenida Cordialidad and Avenida Circunvalar, Carrera 46 and Avenida Circunvalar, Carrera 38 and Avenida Circunvalar. Participants may also gather in other areas and stage "go-slow" protests by deliberately driving at very low speeds or parking vehicles on busy streets, causing traffic congestion throughout the city.
Increased demand for alternative transport is likely in the city. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor related protest activities. Clashes have occurred previously between police and protesting taxi drivers in Colombia; similar confrontations are possible, especially if police attempt to clear any road blockades.
Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution. Plan accordingly for transport disruptions and allow additional travel time. Consider arranging alternative means of transport in advance of the strike. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks. Heed instructions from authorities.
