Climate activists to stage several protest marches in Helsinki, Finland, June 11-12. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Environmental activists affiliated with Elokapina, the Finnish chapter of Extinction Rebellion, plan to hold several protest marches in Helsinki from 15:00 June 11 through 15:00 June 12. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand urgent action to combat climate change. Protest organizers have specified that participating activists, in addition to taking part in the marches, will stage a roadblock after 16:00 on June 11. Authorities assert that the demonstrations may cause significant traffic disruptions. Planned march routes include the following:

  • Esplanadi Park - Mikonkatu - Kaisaniemi Park (Kaisaniemen Puisto) - Varsapuistikko

  • Parliament House (Eduskuntatalo) - Kaivokatu - Kaisaniemenkatu - Kaisaniemi Roundabout

  • Dallape Park (Dallapenpuisto) - Aleksis Kiven Katu - Hameentie - Unioninkatu - Kaisaniemi Roundabout

  • Helsinki Market Square (Kauppatori) - Pohjoisranta - Liisankatu - Kaisaniemi Roundabout

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all march routes from early afternoon June 11 through the end of the demonstrations June 12. Demonstrators may march along different routes with little-to-no notice. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the march routes as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest march paths. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
