India: Increased security likely in Pathankot and Gurdaspur Districts, Punjab State, at least through late June

Security on high alert in Pathankot and Gurdaspur Districts, Punjab State, India, through at least until late June after militants reported.

Warning

Punjab police will likely maintain increased security across the Pathankot and Gurdaspur districts until late June. This is due to reports of the presence of two militants June 25 in the border village of Kot Bhattian. The suspects allegedly were spotted moving towards Kot Pannu village in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. These reports come as Jammu and Kashmir are experiencing heightened security over recent security clashes and the beginning of the Amarnath Yatra on June 29.

Authorities will likely maintain strict security measures, including 24-hour patrols, checkpoints, and vehicle inspections across the Pathankot and Gurdaspur districts. Based on the severity of the perceived threat, the government could expand its existing security presence in the affected areas to encompass additional areas. Related protests could occur near police stations, checkpoints, government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Isolated clashes and security incidents cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are likely. Associated business disruptions are possible.

Exercise extreme caution if operating in or near the impacted regions. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized transport and business disruptions. Always carry proper identification documents. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
