Iran: Casualties reported following a magnitude-4.9 earthquake near Kashmar in Razavi Khorasan Province at around 13:24 June 18 /update 1

A magnitude-4.9 earthquake occurs in Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran, at around 13:24 June 18. Fatalities, damage reported.

Warning

Authorities have reported at least four fatalities and 120 injuries, with at least 35 people hospitalized as a result of a magnitude-4.9 earthquake that occurred on the northern edge of the city of Kashmar in central Razavi Khorasan Province at around 13:24 June 18. The tremor damaged mostly dilapidated buildings in urban and rural areas of Kashmar City.

The epicenter was about 2 km (1.2 miles) north-northwest of the center of Kashmar. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and moderate-to-light shaking was probably felt in Kashmar and surrounding areas, as well as light shaking throughout parts of northeastern Iran. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Monitor and plan for aftershocks. Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity.
