Italy: Authorities to implement tight security, including border controls, for G7 Summit in Fasano, Puglia Region, June 13-15

Italy to host G7 summit in Fasano, June 13-15. Heightened security and air and road transport disruptions certain before and after summit.

Warning

Authorities will implement tight security in the lead-up to, during, and immediately after the G7 Summit, which will be held at the Borgo Egnazia resort near Fasano in Apulia Region, June 11-13. Multiple heads of state, including US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as well as Pope Francis and representatives from multiple global institutions, will attend the summit.

Italy has reintroduced border controls at all air, land, and sea points of entry until 14:00 on June 18. Additional checks at Italy's air, land, and sea borders will likely be implemented depending on the security situation.

Authorities will impose restrictions at several airports in southeast Italy's Apulia Region: Taranto-Grottaglie Airport (TAR) will be completely closed to all civil and commercial aviation June 11-16; Bari International Airport (BRI) will allow the operation of authorized military, state, and emergency flights; and Brindisi Airport (BDS) will carry out reduced operations June 11-16 and will be completely closed 07:00-23:00 June 13.

A security zone will be imposed around the Borgo Egnazia resort and the neighboring town of Savelletri from 13:00 June 11 to 13:00 June 16; unauthorized vehicle and pedestrian access will be prohibited. While the summit will be held at the resort June 13-15, multiple dignitaries, including heads of state, will attend a dinner at the Swabian Castle (Castello Svevo) in Brindisi on June 13. A security zone will be imposed around the castle from 07:00 June 13 to 07:00 June 14. The security zone includes multiple roads and the port area. No vehicles may travel or park within the security zone or along roads used to transport visiting dignitaries. Additionally, multiple state roads in the Apulia Region, including the Brindisi-Lecce, Brindisi-Bari, and Brindisi-Taranto state roads, will be subject to partial or total closure depending on the security situation from 07:00 June 11 to 23:59 June 15.

There have not been any publicized threats to the summit; however, security forces may randomly search pedestrians and vehicles as a precautionary measure. Protests are possible in the lead-up to and during the summit. Potential gathering sites include event venues and locations that foreign guests may visit. However, significant disruptions or violence are unlikely, as demonstrations are likely to remain small and will be controlled quickly by security forces.

Exercise caution around event venues due to increased security protocols. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional travel time in Fasano June 11-16 and Brindisi June 13-14. Confirm flights, especially at TAR, BRI, and BDS June 11-16; do not check out of accommodation without confirming onward travel. Carry proper identification documents. Remain cooperative if stopped by officials for checks. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Allow additional travel time to cross Italian borders.
