Italy: Civil society groups, including dockers union, to protest at Port of Genoa June 25

Civil society groups to stage pro-Palestinian blockades at Port of Genoa, Italy, June 25. Increased security, shipping disruptions likely.

Warning

Civil society organizations, including the Calp dockworkers' union and several student organizations, will stage protest blockades at the Port of Genoa on June 25. Organizers are denouncing weapons shipments from the port to Israel. Participants will gather in two areas within the port from 06:00: Piazzale San Benigno and Varco al Ponte Etiopia. While attendance will likely not exceed the low hundreds, participants intend to blockade access to the affected areas. Previous similar demonstrations have prompted ships to suspend docking and freight unloading procedures.

Increased security will likely be deployed to monitor the gatherings. Localized ground transport disruptions are possible in the area. Maritime transport disruptions and processing delays could extend throughout the day after the protests end as port authorities work to clear any container backlog. Low-level confrontations between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Allow additional time when routing freight through the Port of Genoa on June 25; consider alternative shipping methods for critical cargoes. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution and to mitigate possible disruption.
