New Zealand: Environmental activists plan to demonstrate in Auckland and Christchurch from 13:00 June 8

Environmental protests planned in Auckland and Christchurch, New Zealand, from 13:00 June 8. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Protesters plan to stage demonstrations in Auckland and Christchurch June 8. The purpose of the action is to denounce government policies that are allegedly detrimental to environmental protection, particularly the proposed Fast-track Approvals Bill. A few thousand environmental activists will likely join the protest march in Auckland Central Business District (CBD) from Aotea Square from 13:00; the specific march route is unavailable. In Christchurch, over a hundred demonstrators plan to rally at the Bridge of Remembrance from 13:00.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are probable, especially in Auckland CBD. Increased traffic congestion is likely on alternative routes. Although violence is unlikely, isolated scuffles are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering.

Avoid the protest marches. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; use alternative routes to circumvent march routes. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
