New Zealand: Partial power restoration following unplanned power outage across Northland, as of the evening of June 20 /update 1
Power partially restored across Northland, New Zealand, as of the evening of June 20. Lingering commercial, transport disruptions possible.
Power companies are load-controlling following the partial restoration of power across Northland, as of the evening of June 20. Transpower NZ is continuing repair works after a transmission tower fell near Glorit around 11:00 June 20, causing unplanned power disruptions affecting almost 100,000 customers. The downed pylon is causing travel delays on State Highway 16 between West Coast and Kaipara Hills roads near Glorit; Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is continuing to advise motorists to avoid the area. Officials aim to fully restore power by the evening of June 21 at the earliest.
Although most functions have been restored, lingering commercial and transport disruptions could persist until power is fully restored. Traffic signals have resumed normal operation, although further malfunctions are possible. Businesses without backup generators may have to suspend operations. Officials are shutting off hot water for all households; the outage may also prompt brief municipal water outages, telecommunication disruptions, and electronic water filtration systems interruptions. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences. Opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.
Northland is approximately 80 km (49 miles) north of Auckland. Glorit is approximately 50 km (31 miles) north of Auckland.
Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in Northland. Ensure that generators are functional if operating in affected areas. Confirm business appointments and transport reservations. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Stock up on drinking water and confirm alternative water supplies for business operations if affected by water disruptions. Minimize nonessential water use throughout the outage. Follow all official advisories.
