Nigeria: Assailants carry out attacks in Niger State June 6-7
Suspected Boko Haram militants attack rural communities in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria, June 6-7.
Assailants launched a series of attacks against civilian targets in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State on June 6-7, killing at least 20 people. The assailants have been identified in local media as Boko Haram militants; however, this has not been confirmed. Attacks have been reported in the towns of Bassa, Lanta, Kasimani, Unguwan-Madi, and Makuda.
Officials could deploy to affected areas to confront the militant group. Authorities could also implement movement restrictions in affected locations. Additional attacks are likely amid a generally poor security environment.

Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) are largely based in the northeast of the country but have conducted operations in central Nigeria, including in Niger. Communal violence and attacks by armed criminal groups are also common across much of central and northern Nigeria, particularly in rural and remote locations.
