Nigeria: Labor unions suspend strike amid talks with government June 4 /update 4
Indefinite strike by labor unions suspended across Nigeria as of June 4 amid talks with government. Monitor developments.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended an ongoing nationwide strike that began June 3 amid talks with the government. The suspension is expected to last through June 9.
The work stoppage in response to demands regarding electricity tariffs and minimum wages caused significant disruptions, impacting various sectors such as aviation, railway, electricity, and gas. On June 3, the action led to power cuts nationwide, while striking participants also blocked access to Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV) and Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) airports. Disruptions to domestic and international flights were also reported.
Similar disruptions to various sectors (air, road, and maritime transport, utilities, government services, business operations, and healthcare services, among others) and disruptive protests will likely resume if no agreement is reached with the government.
Monitor developments. As a precaution, allow extra time for travel and confirm all appointments and travel arrangements, including flights, over the coming days. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize; if crowds form or violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately. Do attempt to cross a roadblock. Heed instructions from security services.
