Unidentified assailants stormed the Yargoje and Kankara areas, Kankara Local Government Area (LGA), Katsina State, late June 9-early June 10. Conflicting reports indicate 25-50 residents were killed during the attack. An unspecified number of people, including children, remain unaccounted for. There have been no immediate reports of ransom demands. This follows attacks in the Dutsin-Ma and Safana LGAs of Katsina June 4-6, during which at least 30 civilians were killed. Armed gangs, also called bandits, are likely responsible.

Further attacks remain possible across the state in the near term.

Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in Katsina State. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. If operating in the area in the long term, vary routes and times of travel and ensure the use of secure transport. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.

The northern regions of Nigeria, including Katsina, remain high-risk locations due to recurrent attacks carried out by extremist groups and armed gangs, also called bandits. Insecurity persists despite numerous security measures implemented in recent years, including increased military operations, curfews, and business restrictions. Armed groups engage in various criminal activities, including cattle rustling, looting, extortion, and kidnappings for ransom, among others. Such groups often target communities accused of aiding security forces or not complying with their demands.
