Pakistan: Traders threaten to hold nationwide protests July 1 over electricity price hikes

Unionized traders plan rallies across Pakistan July 1 over power tariffs. Increased security, disruptions possible in cities.

Informational

The All Pakistan Traders Association has threatened to stage nationwide protests July 1 to demand a reduction of electricity tariffs. Details of the gatherings are not immediately clear. Popular gathering spots include large markets, offices of electricity distribution companies, government buildings, public squares, press clubs, major intersections, and prominent monuments. Larger gatherings involving up to a few hundred people are probable in major urban centers; like-minded civil and political groups may also join rallies. The action may be called off at short notice if authorities agree to demands.

If protests materialize, heightened security is possible. Officials may disperse overly disruptive crowds. Localized transport disruptions may occur near gathering sites; officials could impose traffic curbs near well-attended rallies, particularly in main cities. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Large demonstrations and/or associated shutdown strikes may also result in localized business disruptions.

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible violence. Do not navigate roadblocks as protesters may attack vehicles. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately for a secure building. Allow additional travel time in affected areas; confirm business appointments and transport reservations July 1. Monitor trusted local media on protest details as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
