Panama: Unionized construction workers to stage 24-hour nationwide strike and related protests June 20-21
Unionized construction workers to stage 24-hour nationwide strike and related protests from 07:00 June 20 to 07:00 June 21.
Workers affiliated with the National Union of Workers of Construction and Similar Industries (Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construccion y Similares, SUNTRACS) plan to stage a 24-hour strike and associated protests across Panama between 07:00 June 20 and 07:00 June 21. The purpose of the work stoppage and demonstrations is to denounce the reported closure of bank accounts linked to the organization. Organizers announced protests in locations across the country and plan to block main thoroughfares. Some of the main blockades are planned at the following locations:
Panama City: Via Centenario, Avenida Balboa; Corredor Sur (near Costa del Este), Avenida Domingo Diaz
Howard: Pan American Highway
Arraijan: Metro construction sites
Additional demonstrations and accompanying roadblocks will likely materialize in other parts of the country. Localized disruptions to businesses and transport will likely affect areas that are subject to protest activity. Police will likely deploy to monitor the demonstrations and may attempt to disperse protesters and reopen blocked routes. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to avoid protest sites, roadblocks, and related disruptions. Check roads' statuses and local traffic conditions before traveling. If operating in an area where violence breaks out, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
