Romania: Opposing activist groups to stage gatherings in central Cluj-Napoca June 15

Pride parade, counter-demonstration to take place in central Cluj-Napoca, Romania, the afternoon of June 15. Increased security likely.

Warning

Activists from two opposing groups plan to hold competing rallies in central Cluj-Napoca on June 15. Members of the LGBTQ community will hold the annual Cluj Pride parade starting from Piata Unirii at 14:00; organizers did not publish a specific march route. Activists from the Romanian Identity Community Association (Asociația Comunitatea Identitara Romania), on the other hand, will stage an opposing gathering at Piata Avram Iancu from 16:00. It remain unclear how many participant each of the events may draw. Both Cluj Pride and the counter-demonstration occurred in 2023 without incident.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near both gatherings. Although the two events will probably remain largely peaceful, confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, or between activists from opposing camps cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Cluj-Napoca. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
