Romania: Opposition supporters to demonstrate in Bucharest June 7
Supporters of AUR Party to protest at General Prosecutor's Office in Bucharest, Romania, 21:00 June 7. Heightened security likely.
George Simion, President of the opposition Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) Party, is organizing a protest at the General Prosecutor's Office (Cladire Parchetului General, also known as Parchetul de pe Ianga Inalta Curte de Casatie si Justitie) on Bulevardul Libertatii from 21:00 June 7. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce an investigation into George Simion and alleged police misconduct. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers are possible.
Avoid the protest area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the General Prosecutor's Office. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
George Simion is currently under investigation for allegedly falsifying election-related documents. Simion and a small group of supporters demonstrated at the General Prosecutor's Office denouncing the allegations earlier in the day, during which time Simion claimed to have been mistreated by law enforcement officers and announced his intention to conduct a hunger strike.
