Slovakia: Activists to conduct protest march in Bratislava June 18

Activists to march from SNP Square to Freedom Square in Bratislava, Slovakia, 17:00-18:00 June 18. Heightened security likely.

Informational

Activists affiliated with a variety of civil society organizations plan to hold a protest march in central Bratislava 17:00-18:00 June 18. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce planned media reforms. Participants will gather at SNP Square before marching to Freedom Square (Namestie Slobody) where a concert will take place. It remains unclear clear how many participants the event may draw; however, previous rallies over the same issue have drawn thousands of attendees.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely between the march start and endpoints. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling between SNP Square and Freedom Square. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
