South Africa: Activists plan to stage cycling protest in Johannesburg June 16

Activists to gather at Anglo-Boer War Memorial in Johannesburg, South Africa, 10:00 June 16 for cycling protest; traffic disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the Youth Affected by Mining United in Action (YAMUA) group plan to stage a cycling protest in Johannesburg on June 16. Demonstration organizers have asserted that the purpose of the protest is "aimed at raising awareness about the injustices faced by communities due to the actions of major mining companies." Protest participants plan to gather at the Anglo-Boer War Memorial, located at 22 Erlswold Way in Saxonwold, from 10:00 and then cycle from 11:00 to mining company offices at three locations in the following order:

  1. 144 Oxford Road, Rosebank area

  2. 15 Chaplin Road, Illovo area

  3. 39 Melrose Boulevard, Birnam area

The number of people that would participate in the demonstration and the intended cycling route were not immediately clear. The protest will likely cause localized traffic disruptions. Business disruptions are also possible. Authorities will probably deploy a heightened security presence to the mining company offices at the three abovementioned locations. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the cycling protest as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
