South Africa: Ground travel delays and heightened security in central Pretoria (Tshwane), June 19

Officials to close roads and increase security in central Pretoria (Tshwane), South Africa, June 19, for presidential inauguration.

Warning

Cyril Ramaphosa of the African National Congress (ANC) will be inaugurated as President of South Africa at the Union Buildings Amphitheatre and its South Lawns in Pretoria (Tshwane) on June 19. The inauguration follows the May 29 general election and Ramaphosa's nomination and reelection as president during the National Assembly sitting on June 14. Officials have announced extensive road closures near the Union Buildings from 03:00 June 19 through 06:00 June 20. A full list of road closures is available here. A park-and-ride facility will also be in place at the Tshwane Events Centre for members of the public wishing to attend the event.

Security will almost certainly be heightened in central Pretoria on June 19 to safeguard various local and international dignitaries who are scheduled to attend. The election passed peacefully; however, some political parties remain opposed to Ramaphosa and the outcome of the polls. Protests could occur near the Union Buildings or in the wider city on the day. Police are likely to divert resources to monitor, manage, or disperse any demonstrations that occur. In addition to the road closures, increased traffic congestion is almost certain throughout central Pretoria on June 19 as motorists use alternative routes. Some disruptions are also possible at nearby airports, including O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), as high-profile guests arrive and later depart.

Heed official advisories. Consider avoiding nonessential travel in central Tshwane on June 19 to mitigate delays and disruptions. Avoid all protests and concentrations of security personnel. Monitor online security force platforms for updates. Reconfirm transport services.
