South Korea: Unionized teachers plan to protest in Seoul June 22

Unionized teachers plan to stage protest in Seoul June 22. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized teachers, from the National School Non-regular Workers' Union and the National Education Civil Service Headquarters of the Public Transport Workers' Union, plan to hold a protest in Seoul on June 22. This is to demand a raise in the minimum and real wages. As of June 21, no information has been released as to the location or time of the protest. However, the demonstration will likely occur in front of the Seoul Government Complex, as this is where the unions previously demonstrated on June 13. Additional potential demonstration sites include public venues and thoroughfares. Union officials claim 15,000 union members will participate.

Authorities will likely monitor any demonstration as a precaution. While the gathering will likely be peaceful, isolated minor scuffles between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are possible. Associated business disruptions are possible.

Avoid all gatherings as a standard precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized transport and business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
