Taiwan: Transport disruptions possible islandwide during Dragon Boat Festival June 8-10

Taiwan to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival June 8-10. Main events to take place in Taipei. Transport disruptions possible islandwide.

Warning

Taiwan will celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Jie) June 8-10. Authorities have designated June 8-10 as public holidays in 2023. Dragon boat races will take place on the Dajia River in Taipei. Other significant celebrations and competitions will likely take place in New Taipei, Hualien, Kinmen County, Puli, Taitung, Taoyuan, and Zhunan.

Increased security is likely at all public events. The festival may prompt transport disruptions, with overcrowding and delays possible at bus terminals and train stations through late June 10. Heavy congestion is possible on main highways during peak travel periods; significant delays could occur on Freeway 1 (Sun Yat-sen Freeway), Freeway 3 (Formosa Freeway), and Freeway 5 (Chiang Wei-shui Memorial Freeway). Heavy traffic may cause logistics disruptions, particularly for commercial trucking. Business closures are likely during the celebration June 8-10.

Allow extra time to reach destinations if driving long distances is unavoidable during the holiday period. Arrive earlier than usual at transport hubs due to potential delays at check-in counters, health screenings, and security checkpoints.
