Uruguay: Unions to hold protest in Montevideo, partial strike nationwide June 27 to commemorate the 1973 general strike

Activists to hold a protest in Montevideo and four-hour strike across Uruguay, June 27, to commemorate a 1973 general strike.

Unionized activists, including members of the Plenary of Workers-National Convention of Workers (Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores-Convencion Nacional de Trabajadores, PIT-CNT), plan to hold a protest in Montevideo and a four-hour nationwide strike on June 27, to commemorate a 1973 general strike launched against the start of a military regime.

Demonstrators intend to gather at Plaza Huelga General, along Avenida 8 de Octubre, starting at 09:00. The four-hour nationwide strike will be held from 09:00-13:00. Additionally, other groups and unions have announced more extended strikes for June 27, including unionized teachers of Montevideo, affiliated to the Teachers Association of Uruguay (Asociacion de Maestras de Uruguay, ADEMU), who plan to hold a 24-hour strike; public health workers in the Metropolitan Area of Montevideo intend to strike between 06:00-18:00, and private health workers will strike nationwide between 08:00-14:00.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the protest area; business disruptions are possible due to the strikes.
