Emergency crews working to contain wildfire near Scottsdale, Ariz., US, as of the afternoon of June 29. Evacuations ongoing.

Warning

Crews are working to contain a wildfire burning on the outskirts of Scottsdale, Arizona, as of the afternoon of June 29. The Boulder View Fire broke out near the Boulder Heights community in North Scottsdale on the afternoon of June 27 and is approximately 1,512 hectares (3,736 acres) in size and zero percent contained. More than 240 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire; hot, windy, and dry conditions may hamper firefighting efforts over the coming days. Additional wildfire growth is likely.

Evacuations and Closures
Due to the fire's growth, authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for some residents near the fire. The following areas are currently under closure and evacuation orders:

  • Barlett Lake Dam Road is closed at Cave Creek Road.

  • 136th Street to Box Bar Road, Rio Verde Road to Dove Valley.

  • 136th Street to 144th Street, Dove Valley to Tonto National Forest.

Authorities have identified the following areas that large animals can be relocated to:

  • Cave Creek Rodeo Grounds

  • Reigning Grace Ranch (28150 N Alma School Pkwy., Scottsdale)

  • Cave Creek Outfitters (31313 N 144th St., Scottsdale)

  • AERO (27317 N 148th St Scottsdale)

Transport
The wildfire may cause some localized transport disruptions in the area. Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days; authorities could close routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
