US: Flight disruptions likely in parts of northeast, including New York metropolitan area and Boston, into early June 24 due to severe weather

Severe weather disrupts flights in New York metropolitan area and Boston, Mass., US, June 23; lingering flight delays, cancellations likely.

Warning

Flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, will likely continue to affect airports in the New York metropolitan area and Boston, Massachusetts, into at least early June 24 due to thunderstorms impacting the region. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued ground delay programs at LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International (JFK) airports, which are in effect until at least 01:00 EDT June 24, with similar directives in force at Newark International (EWR) and Boston Logan International (BOS) airport until at least 23:59 June 23. The FAA may modify or rescind the ground delays on short notice. As of the afternoon of June 23, flight delays at LGA average 140 minutes, with those at JFK averaging 168 minutes, 141 minutes at EWR, and 88 minutes to BOS.

The FAA may issue additional weather-related ground delay programs and/or ground stops for airports in the Northeast region over the coming hours. Residual disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs.

Confirm flight schedules if booked to travel via an airport in the New York metropolitan area or Boston into at least early June 24; do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
