US: Flight disruptions likely in parts of northeast, including New York metropolitan area and Boston, through late June 22 due to severe weather

Severe weather disrupts flights in New York metropolitan area and Boston, Mass., US, June 22; lingering flight delays, cancellations likely.

Warning

Flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, will likely continue to affect airports in the New York metropolitan area and Boston, Massachusetts, into at least late June 22 due to thunderstorms impacting the region. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued ground stop programs at LaGuardia (LGA), Newark International (EWR), and John F. Kennedy International (JFK) airports, which are in effect until at least 16:15 EDT June 22, with ground delay programs extending to 22:00 and 23:59 at EWR and JFK respectively. The FAA has also issued a ground delay at Boston Logan International (BOS) airport until at least 23:00 June 22. The FAA may modify or rescind the ground delays and ground stops on short notice. As of the afternoon of June 22, some flights to the airports in question are being held at their points of origin, delaying arrivals at LGA by an average of 75 minutes, JFK by an average of 150 minutes, and EWR by 102 minutes; and an average of 75 minutes to BOS.

The FAA may issue additional weather-related ground delay programs and/or ground stops for airports in the Northeast region over the coming hours. Residual disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs.

Confirm flight schedules if booked to travel via an airport in the New York metropolitan area or Boston into at least early June 23; do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
