Yemen: Al-Houthi authorities detain 15 individuals associated with various non-governmental organizations, June 6
Al-Houthi authorities detain 15 individuals, including nine employees of the UN, June 6.
Al-Houthi authorities detained 15 local nationals associated with or employed by various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including the United Nations, on June 6. At least nine UN employees, three employees of a US-backed pro-democracy group, and three employees of a local human rights group are suspected to have been detained. The precise nature and location of the arrests remain unclear. Neither the UN nor the Al-Houthis have confirmed the arrests. The detainees were likely targeted due to their association with the UN and US-backed NGO groups.
The arrests come amid an Al-Houthi crackdown on elements of civil society during their involvement in the Israel-Hamas conflict. While the Al-Houthis have gained widespread support for their ongoing participation in the Israel-Hams conflict within Yemen and throughout much of the wider region, it has come amid a crackdown on dissent and perceived threats to their control.
