Canada: Severe weather forecast across parts of southeastern Ontario and southern Quebec through at least July 25 /update 1

Severe weather forecast in southeastern Ontario and southern Quebec, Canada, through July 25. Flooding and associated disruptions possible.

Warning

Severe weather is forecast across parts of southeastern Ontario and southern Quebec through at least July 25. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across the regions over the coming hours. Strong winds, lightning, and hail may accompany storms. As of July 24, Environment Canada has issued red rainfall warnings (the highest level on a three-tier scale) for the Temiscaming and Ville-Marie areas of Quebec. Severe thunderstorm warnings are in place for two separate areas in southeastern Ontario from Winona to Jarvis and from Kennisis Lake to Fenelon Falls. Yellow severe thunderstorm watches are in place across the affected area in Ontario and over the southern half of the affected area in Quebec. Gray special weather statements are in place for the rest of the affected area in Quebec. Officials could update, rescind, or extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming hours.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding, landslides, or strong winds impact utility networks.

Floodwaters and debris flows will likely render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas that see heavy rainfall and potential track inundation. Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas.

Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business arrangements before traveling in the affected area. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast; plan for possible supply chain disruptions throughout the affected areas. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
