Olympic Games to prompt heightened security and disruptions around Teahupo’o Wave, French Polynesia, July 28-Aug. 6.

Informational

Surfing competitions for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will occur at Teahupo’o Wave, French Polynesia, July 28-Aug. 6, prompting heightened security and localized disruptions. The venue is approximately 16 km (10 miles) southeast of Taravao.

Tight security is likely at Tahiti's Faaʻa International Airport (PPT) and other border controls throughout the competition period. Authorities have imposed road closures and traffic control measures to create security zones around the main venue and supporting venues like the Teahupo’o Football Stadium which will be used for emergencies. The offshore floating athletes' village near the event venue also faces elevated security. Additional security patrols are likely at transport hubs, tourist hotspots, and sporting events.

Although French Polynesian authorities have not specified any threat to the event, officials in France have declared an elevated terrorist threat in recent months; the national threat warning is at its highest level since March. National security authorities have also noted significant levels of cyberattacks, which are exacerbated by international tensions. Opportunistic crime such as pickpocketing cannot be ruled out in crowded places such as event venues and tourist sites.

Transport disruptions due to security checks, road closures, and revised public transport schedules are likely. Increased scrutiny could prompt processing delays at airports and border crossings. Local businesses may alter operating hours to accommodate increased demand and/or comply with security curbs.

Remain aware of your surroundings at events and other crowded places. Plan for transport disruptions throughout the competition. Allow additional time for travel and security procedures in the vicinity of events. Carry proper identification documents and entry permits to present at security checks. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
