Germany: Authorities to defuse WWII bomb in Mainz July 4

Authorities to conduct WWII bomb disposal operation on Paul-Denis-Strasse in Mainz, Germany, July 4; evacuations and road closures planned.

Warning

Authorities plan to defuse an unexploded WWII bomb on Paul-Denis-Strasse in Mainz on July 4. The unexploded ordnance was discovered on July 2 amid construction work in the area. Officials will establish an approximately 500-meter (1,640-foot) safety area around the bomb's location and close several local roads; the public must evacuate this area by 09:00 July 4. Rail transport disruptions will likely affect nearby Mainz Station. Officials did not immediately specify how long the bomb disposal operation would last.

After taking effect on July 4, the evacuation order, road closures, heightened security measures, and likely road and rail transport disruptions will continue until authorities give the all-clear. Localized transport disruptions are also likely to affect the area that is immediately outside of the evacuation zone.

Avoid the vicinity of the bomb disposal operation on July 4. Consider taking alternative routes if operating near the evacuation zone. Allow additional time for rail travel via Mainz Station. Strictly heed all instructions from authorities.
