Niger: Suspected militant attack in Foneko, Tillaberi Region, July 22

Suspected militants kill at least 15 security personnel in Foneko, Tillaberi Region, July 22; heightened security likely in the coming days.

Warning

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the vicinity of Foneko, Tillaberi Region, over the coming days after suspected militants killed at least 15 and injured 16 Nigerien Armed Forces (Forces Armees Nigeriennes, FAN) personnel on July 22; at least three FAN soldiers are missing. Officials also reported that FAN troops killed around 21 militants during the clash. The attack occurred along the Bankilare-Tera route amid a reported ongoing security operation. Authorities reportedly mobilized additional security personnel from Tera, forcing suspected militants to retreat northward. While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) or the Islamic State group are the suspected perpetrators.

Authorities could implement movement restrictions, vehicle checks, or curfew measures in the area on short notice in response to the assault. Similar attacks and armed clashes between militants and militia personnel cannot be ruled out over the coming days.

Foneko is located approximately 21 km (13 mi) north of Tera.

Due to the threat of further militant violence, exercise heightened vigilance if operating in the Tillaberi Region or other areas in western Niger. Consider traveling with a security escort during daylight hours and only after a detailed review of your route. Heed all official directives. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.

Insecurity is prevalent across Niger, particularly in the country's western, northern, and south-eastern areas. Despite current security operations, security forces remain largely unable to counter the threat posed by the numerous militant groups operating in the countrywide. Such armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces on a regular basis.
