Nigeria: Education unions threaten to strike from July 4 if government does not meet their demands

Education unions to hold strike across Nigeria from July 4 if government does not meet their demands. Related protests possible.

Informational

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) are planning to begin a nationwide strike from July 4 over unpaid salaries. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may also join the action. The unions held a seven-day strike March 18-24. Should the union’s demands remain unanswered by the government, strike and protest calls are likely to persist in the coming weeks.

Associated protests are possible. Likely gathering locations include the vicinity of government buildings and education facilities, particularly universities. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protests. Clashes with security forces are possible.

Exercise caution near likely protest locations. Avoid all protests to mitigate associated disruptions. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
