Nigeria: Education unions to demonstrate nationwide on July 9, in Abuja on July 18 /update 1
Education unions to protest across Nigeria July 9; in Abuja on July 18. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) plan to stage nationwide demonstrations on July 9, with a separate protest in Abuja on July 18. The purpose of the two actions is to demand the payment of four months' salary still owed in arrears to union members following failed negotiations with government authorities. The protests are in lieu of an indefinite strike that labor leaders had originally announced would begin on July 4; a new strike date will be announced after the demonstrations, if workers' demands remain unmet.
Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that may materialize. Although organizers have as yet announced no specific rally locations, gatherings will probably occur primarily in the vicinity of government buildings and education facilities, particularly universities. Clashes with security forces are possible. Related demonstrations over the same issue could take place on dates other than those specifically announced.
Exercise caution near likely protest locations. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes break out nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
