Nigeria: Power disruptions reported across country as of late July 6
Power disruptions reported across Nigeria as of late July 6; consequent disruptions to business, telecommunications, and transport likely.
Power disruptions have been reported across Nigeria as of late July 6. The Independent System Operator of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a substantial decline in power generation across the country since around 15:00. The decline in power generation has coincided with notices from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) of an electrical system "failure" and "collapse," respectively. EEDC authorities have added that they could not provide services to customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states as of around 18:00. The time at which power would be fully restored to affected areas was not immediately clear.
Disruptions to business and telecommunications, including mobile SMS, voice, and internet services, are likely in areas experiencing blackouts. Transport disruptions will probably affect areas with malfunctioning traffic signals. The power disruptions could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and gas stations. Additionally, blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.
Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are operational, including after power is restored. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled.
