Pakistan: Anti-government protests by Jamaat-e-Islami party at multiple intersections in Islamabad prompting disruptions as of July 27 /update 1

Jamaat-e-Islami rallies in Islamabad, Pakistan, causing increased security and traffic disruptions as of July 27. Violence possible.

Warning

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party is holding an indefinite sit-in protest at Islamabad's D-Chowk intersection as of July 27; the protest started the afternoon of July 26. Additional gatherings are occurring at Zero Point and Chongi Number 26 intersections, as well as Murree Road in Rawalpindi. The action is to denounce the effects of alleged misgovernance, including economic issues, increased electricity prices, and loadshedding. A few thousand people are attending the demonstrations, defying ongoing Section 144 orders that prohibit unauthorized public gatherings.

Security personnel are monitoring the protests and have arrested multiple activists. Islamabad's Red Zone, which houses key government buildings and diplomatic enclaves, is cordoned off. Tight security is also probable at popular alternative protest sites, including public squares like the Parade Ground, monuments, and parks such as the Fatima Jinnah/F-9 Park. Clashes between police and activists are possible, mainly if demonstrators attempt to breach security cordons. Officials may impose localized movement and mobile internet curbs in case of significant violence.

Congestion due to protester caravans, roadblocks, and traffic restrictions are affecting several access roads to the Islamabad Capital Territory, such as the Islamabad Toll Plaza along the M-2 motorway and Zero Point Interchange along the Srinagar Highway. Associated local business disruptions are possible.

Avoid demonstrations due to possible violence. Do not navigate roadblocks, as protesters may attack vehicles. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately for a secure building. Allow additional travel time in the affected area; confirm transport reservations to, from, and within the capital territory until the action ends. Monitor trusted local media on protest updates, as organizers may not announce changes in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
