Pakistan: Jamaat-e-Islami party to hold anti-government protest at D-Chowk, Islamabad, July 12

Jamaat-e-Islami rally planned in Islamabad, Pakistan, July 12 over government policies. Increased security, localized disruptions certain.

Warning

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party plans to hold a sit-in protest at Islamabad's D-Chowk intersection the afternoon of July 12. The action is to denounce the effects of alleged misgovernance, including economic issues, increased electricity prices, and load shedding. Up to a few thousand people may attend the event; caravans of supporters will reach the venue from various parts of the country. Protest plans may change at short notice if authorities deny or cancel permission for the event.

Security personnel will almost certainly monitor the protest and move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Tight security is also probable at government buildings, diplomatic enclaves, and popular alternative protest sites, including public squares like the Parade Ground, monuments, and parks such as the Fatima Jinnah/F-9 Park. Localized transport disruptions and traffic curbs are likely near the gathering site. Increased traffic congestion along highways leading to Islamabad is also probable.

Local officials have previously issued Section 144 orders in the lead-up to large rallies; the rules prohibit unauthorized public gatherings of more than four people and the carriage of arms in public, among others. Other enhanced security measures, such as limiting entry to sensitive areas like Islamabad's Red Zone, are likely. Authorities typically impose roadblocks and vehicle checks as a precaution. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Associated local business disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration due to possible violence. Do not navigate roadblocks as protesters may attack vehicles. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately for a secure building. Allow additional travel time in the affected area; confirm transport reservations to, from, and within Islamabad July 12. Monitor trusted local media on protest updates as organizers may not announce changes in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
