Pakistan: Traders to hold nationwide protests from 16:00 July 1 over electricity price hikes /update 1

Unionized traders plan rallies across Pakistan from 16:00 July 1 over power tariffs. Increased security likely.

Informational

The All Pakistan Traders Association will stage nationwide protests from 16:00 July 1 to demand a reduction of electricity tariffs. The largest rally will occur at Islamabad’s Aabpara Chowk square; details of other rallies are unclear. Popular gathering spots include markets, offices of electricity distribution companies, government buildings, public squares, press clubs, major intersections, and prominent monuments. Larger gatherings involving up to a few hundred people are probable in district headquarters and major urban centers. The main opposition party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is supporting the protest; other like-minded civil and political groups may also join rallies. The action may be called off at short notice if authorities agree to demands or ban events.

If protests materialize, heightened security is likely. Officials may disperse overly disruptive crowds. Localized transport disruptions may occur near gathering sites; officials could impose traffic curbs near well-attended rallies, particularly in main cities. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Large demonstrations and/or associated shutdown strikes may also result in localized business disruptions.

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible violence. Do not navigate roadblocks as protesters may attack vehicles. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately for a secure building. Allow additional travel time in affected areas; confirm business appointments and transport reservations July 1. Monitor trusted local media on protest details as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
