Panama: Heightened security likely in Panama City during and immediately after presidential inauguration ceremony in capital July 1

Presidential inauguration ceremony to occur in Panama City, Panama, from 12:30 July 1; lingering heightened security measures likely.

Warning

Authorities will almost certainly maintain heightened security measures in Panama City during and immediately after the presidential inauguration of Jose Raul Mulino in the capital July 1. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 12:30 at the ATLAPA Convention Center, with various foreign dignitaries in attendance. Some 1,500 personnel are slated to bolster security and ensure public safety amid the event, and authorities have also implemented traffic detours in the capital as part of their security preparations.

Transport and business disruptions will likely affect areas subject to heightened security measures. Political demonstrations are possible in Panama City during and after the inauguration. Isolated clashes between demonstrators and police, while unlikely, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the inauguration venue as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the vicinity and any disruptions that materialize. Allow additional time for travel in Panama City. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.

Mulino won the presidential election on May 5 and will take office on July 1 for a five-year term.
