Portugal: Nurses to strike, protest in numerous districts July 9-10

Unionized private hospital nurses to strike across Portugal July 9-10; protests planned in central Lisbon July 9 and Porto July 10.

Unionized private hospital nurses affiliated with the Portuguese Nurses' Union (SEP) plan to strike and protest in numerous districts July 9-10. The purpose of the labor action is to demand increased salaries and reduced working hours. Previous related actions took place from May 24 to June 28. Participating nurses will strike in the following districts:

  • Aveiro: July 10

  • Braga: July 10

  • Braganca: July 10

  • Beja: July 9

  • Castelo Branco: July 10

  • Coimbra: July 10

  • Evora: July 9

  • Faro: July 9

  • Guarda: July 10

  • Leiria: July 10

  • Lisbon: July 9

  • Portalegre: July 9

  • Porto: July 10

  • Santarem: July 9

  • Setubal: July 9

  • Viana do Castelo: July 10

  • Vila Real: July 10

  • Viseu: July 10

Participants will also conduct one central demonstration on each strike day. On July 9, participants will protest at the Portuguese Association of Private Hospitalization (APHP) headquarters on Avenida Luis Bivar in Lisbon from 10:30. On July 10, participants will demonstrate at the Hospital CUF Porto in Porto on Estrada da Circunvalacao from 10:30.

Medical service disruptions are in affected districts July 9-10. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are possible near the demonstrations. Smaller demonstrations are possible at private medical institutions nationwide. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Reconfirm all medical appointments at private clinics and hospitals in affected districts during the strike period. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Strictly heed instructions from authorities.
