Portugal: Unionized public transport workers plan strike in Lisbon, July 11

Unionized workers on Lisbon's public transport system plan to hold a 24-hour strike on July 11. Members of STRUP (Union of Road and Urban Transport Workers of Portugal) will demand increased pay. The industrial action will likely severely impact the CARRIS network of buses and trams. It is unclear whether a minimum level of service will be guaranteed during the labor action. Disruptions may continue into the peak travel hours on July 12. The union has threatened a further partial strike July 15-19.

Unless averted, the strike will likely be well observed and result in delays and cancellations of public transport services. Increased congestion is likely on other forms of transportation during the labor action. Heightened demand for alternative modes of transportation may also result in reduced taxi availability. Protests by striking workers are possible at transport hubs and in front of government buildings.
