South Africa: Officials confirm some circuits back on after power outage causes flight disruptions at Cape Town International Airport late July 28 /update 1

Some circuits back on after power outage disrupts flights at Cape Town International Airport in Cape Town, South Africa, late July 28.

Warning

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) officials have confirmed that "some circuits are back on" at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town after a power outage prevented flights from landing at or departing from the facility late July 28. The power supply disruptions also reportedly prompted authorities to divert flights scheduled to operate via CPT to other South African airports. As of around 23:30, ACSA had reported that some flights on United Airlines (UA), Delta Air Lines (DL), and South African Airways (SA) had successfully departed CPT, and that technicians were continuing to work on restoring additional circuits for landings. Officials will probably provide further updates over the coming hours.

Flight delays and cancellations will almost certainly continue to affect CPT until the power supply issue is resolved. Residual disruptions are possible even after power is fully restored as airlines work to clear any passenger backlogs that have materialized.

Confirm flight reservations if scheduled to travel via CPT; do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
