South Africa: Ongoing union strike to possibly affect airports nationwide as of July 16

Unionized aviation industry workers continue indefinite strike in South Africa as of July 16. Airport disruptions possible.

Warning

Unionized aviation workers form the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) are continuing their indefinite nationwide strike as of July 16. The strike affects a baggage handling and ground services subcontractor operating in several of the country's largest airports. The strike began July 15 with localized protests near airports; workers are demanding changes in their pay structure.

The union has warned that the strike could affect the following airports: Cape Town Airport (CPT), King Shaka Airport in Durban (DUR), King Phalo Airport in East London (ELS), and OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg (JNB). The union has also warned that disruptions could affect the following airlines: Cathay Pacific (CX), Qantas (QA), Qatar Airways (QR), and Safair (FA). As of July 16, no such disruptions have been noted.

Increased security is likely near protest locations, potentially disrupting ground travel arrival and departure from airports. Minor skirmishes between protesting workers and security services are possible. The action is likely causing disruptions to baggage processing. Slower check-ins, baggage retrievals, and security procedures, as well as flight delays and cancellations, are possible at affected airports and on affected airlines. Residual disruptions are possible once the issue is resolved as technicians work to clear any backlog.

Avoid all protests that may occur. Allow additional time for check-in and baggage retrieval. Confirm flights arriving or departing from CPT, DUR, ELS, and JNB; confirm flights if traveling with CX, QA, QR, and FA.
