South Korea: Samsung Electronics Workers' Union extends nationwide strike indefinitely as of July 10 /update 1
Samsung Electronics Workers' Union extends strike indefinitely in South Korea as of July 10. Protests, localized disruptions possible.
The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU) plans to extend an ongoing nationwide strike indefinitely beyond the initial three-day period as of July 10. Union leaders are calling for improved compensation and benefits for their 28,000 members, who make up about 20 percent of the company's workforce. However, reports indicate that only around 6,540 members are participating in the action, primarily from manufacturing and product development sites. Despite the union's claims of production impacts, Samsung maintains that the strike has not disrupted operations, including chip manufacturing, likely due to low participation and automated manufacturing processes.
Workers may protest during the labor action; hundreds to thousands of people could participate in each gathering. The largest protests will probably occur outside Samsung Electronics factories, Samsung Electronics Seocho Building in Seoul, and Samsung Headquarters in Hwaseong. Striking workers may block access roads, causing localized transport disruptions. Police could tighten security around the company's facilities as a precaution.
Limit exposure to likely protest sites. Allow additional time to reach destinations if traveling or operating near Samsung Electronics facilities due to the potential for localized traffic disruptions. Plan for possible supply chain disruptions in the event of a prolonged labor action.
