South Korea: Unionized Hyundai autoworkers to hold partial strike nationwide July 10-11
Unionized Hyundai autoworkers to hold partial strike across South Korea July 10-11. Protests, localized transport disruptions possible.
Unionized Hyundai Motor employees have called for a partial strike July 10-11 amid ongoing wage and retirement age negotiations with the company. Workers across Hyundai Motor's Asan, Jeonju, and Ulsan plants, as well as Hyundai Motor offices in Seoul and the Namyang Research and Development Center in Hwaseong, will participate in a four-hour work stoppage. Participation in the action will probably be high, as almost 90 percent of the union's 43,000 members have voted to support the strike. However, major production delays are unlikely.
Autoworkers may hold protests during the labor action, and demonstrations could draw several hundred workers. The most disruptive protests will likely occur outside factories in Asan, Jeonju, and Ulsan, though gatherings are possible at other locations in cities like Hwaseong and Seoul. Striking workers may block access roads, causing localized transport disruptions. Police will likely tighten security around the company's facilities as a precaution.
Limit exposure to likely protest sites. Allow additional time to reach destinations if traveling or operating near Hyundai Motor facilities due to the potential localized traffic disruptions.
