Warning

Crews are working to contain a wildfire burning in El Dorado County, California, as of late July 6. The Pay Fire broke out in the early afternoon of July 6 near the town of Placerville. The fire has burned around 8 hectares (20 acres) on Paydirt Drive and is spreading quickly. According to authorities, the flames are moving toward the Placerville Airport (PVF) along Country Club Drive, and some airplane hangers are involved in the fire. The fire has resulted in power outages impacting about 2,000 customers. The cause of the fire is under investigation; however, the ongoing heatwave in the region and warm, dry, and breezy conditions have aided the fire's growth. Further wildfire growth will likely occur in the coming hours and days.

The fire is primarily threatening western El Dorado. As of late July 6, authorities have issued evacuation orders and warnings for several roads and areas south of Placerville. Officials have established an emergency shelter at the Placerville Library at 345 Fair Lane.

Depending on the progression of the wildfire, the status of nearby roads could change over the coming hours and days. Authorities may close additional routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate more communities depending on fire activity and the needs of response operators. The return of residents will probably disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Power outages are likely in affected areas. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
