US: Flash flood warnings in effect for parts of northern and north-central Arkansas until at least 10:15 CDT July 17

Authorities issue flash flood warnings for parts of northern Arkansas, US, through at least 10:15 CDT July 17. Flooding disruptions ongoing.

Warning

The US National Weather Service (NWS) issued several flash flood warnings for parts of northern and north-central Arkansas July 17. A flash flooding warning is in place through at least 10:15 CDT for north-central parts of the state, including Conway, Herber Springs, and Greenbrier. Warnings are also in place for northern areas through 09:00 CDT, including Gassville, Flippin, Marshall, Mountain Home, Bull Shoals, and Midway. A flash flood emergency warning has been issued for parts of Marion County around Yellville and Summit. Severe flooding is reportedly ongoing in this area; several roads have been inundated by floodwaters and initial reports indicate flood damage in places. A nursing home in the area has been evacuated and emergency services have been carrying out flood rescue operations in the region.

Officials could update or amend the warnings for the impact areas or surrounding region in the coming hours.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall.

Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
