US: Flight disruptions likely to affect Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, N.J., into at least early July 2 due to staffing issues

Staffing issues cause flight disruptions at Newark Liberty International Airport, Newark, N.J., US, July 1; disruptions likely into July 2.

Warning

Flight delays and cancellations will likely affect Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in Newark, New Jersey, into at least early July 2 due to air traffic control staffing issues. As of the evening of July 1, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had issued a ground delay program for EWR that was slated to remain in effect until at least 01:59 July 2; the FAA may modify or rescind the ground delay program on short notice. As of around 20:00, departures to EWR were experiencing delays averaging 3 hours and 13 minutes, while departures from EWR were delayed by an average of 45 minutes.

The FAA may issue additional ground delay programs and/or ground stops for EWR over the coming hours. Residual disruptions are possible even after staffing conditions improve as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs.

Confirm flight reservations if scheduled to travel via EWR July 1-2; do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. If necessary, consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel.
