US: Heightened security and street closures planned in Washington, DC, July 8-12
Disruptions, including road closures, planned in Washington, DC, US, July 8-12 due to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Summit.
Heightened security and street closures are planned in several areas of Washington, DC, from July 8-12 due to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) Summit. Dozens of government officials from the 32 member countries will attend the event in the capital.
Authorities have confirmed several security measures for the summit, which will include disruptions around the areas hosting the summit, including the Mellon Auditorium, the Washington Convention Center, the Carnegie Library, Mount Vernon Square, and the White House.
The following areas will close to vehicle traffic from 12:00 July 8 to 23:59 July 11:
H Street from Vermont Avenue to 17th Street NW
Connecticut Avenue from H Street to I Street NW
16th Street from H Street to I Street NW
The following areas will close to vehicle traffic for most of July 9:
Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues from 9th to 15th Streets NW
Areas of 10-14th Streets from E Street to Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues NW
Inbound 14th Street Bridge to Exit 1 and 14th Street/ National Mall SW
The following areas will close to vehicle traffic 14:00-23:59 July 10:
17th Street from I Street to Constitution Avenue NW
18th Street from E Street to Constitution Avenue NW
New York Avenue, F Street, G, Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, H Street, E Street, D Street, and C Street NW between 17th and 18th Street NW
Multiple streets around the Washington Convention Center will close to vehicle traffic between 09:30 July 9 and 12:00 July 12, including:
L Street from 7th to 9th Street NW (starting 09:00 July 8)
Parts of 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Street NW between H and and O Streets NW
New York Avenue between 6th and 12th Streets NW
Massachusetts Avenue between 6th and 11th Streets NW
Other street closures are possible. Residences and businesses within the affected area will be accessible by pedestrians, but they may have to go through security procedures. Multiple Metrobus routes will have detours; the Federal Triangle metro station will close all of July 9, and the Mount Vernon Square Station will be closed between 11:00 July 9 and 05:00 July 12.
Additionally, multiple summit-related demonstrations will likely occur throughout the city during the event. Clashes between protesters and police are possible.
If operating near the affected areas of Washington, DC, July 8-12, plan for delays. Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution and to minimize delays.
