Albania: Political activists to demonstrate in central Tirana Aug. 29

Political activists to protest at City Hall in Tirana, Albania, 11:00 Aug. 29. Heightened security, road travel disruptions likely.

Warning

Political activists plan to protest at City Hall (Bashkia e Tiranes) on Sheshi Skenderbej from 11:00 Aug. 29. The action is part of a series of demonstrations aimed at denouncing the city's mayor and other officials following accusations of alleged corruption in municipal contracts, as well as the alleged poor performance of the city's municipal waste disposal services. Several hundred people are likely to attend the demonstration. Previous gatherings resulted in clashes, injuries, and arrests. Law enforcement officers also closed roads near previous related gatherings.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor the event. Associated transport disruptions are likely near the protest site if police close major roads. Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Tirana through at least the late afternoon on Aug. 29. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
