Canada: Possible nationwide freight rail strike from Aug. 22

Possible nationwide freight rail strike in Canada from Aug. 22. Reconfirm freight rail services.

Warning

Canada's two largest freight rail companies, Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Canadian National Railway, have announced plans to begin a nationwide strike from Aug. 22. Unless an agreement is reached before then, both rail operators plan to lock out workers represented by the Teamsters Canada union beginning 00:01 Aug. 22. Plans for a lockout were announced due to labor disputes involving the two companies and the workers' union. The two freight rail companies have reportedly already started halting some shipments to prepare for the potential strike, which would involve around 9,300 workers.

Unless averted, the labor action will significantly disrupt freight transport across Canada. Disruptions to cross-border trade between the US and Canada will likely also be affected. Freight rail services, especially for refrigerated or hazardous materials, may be halted before Aug. 22 in preparation for the work stoppage. Demand for alternative forms of transportation would also likely increase. There have been no reports of planned pickets; however, should the strike proceed, some gatherings could occur, particularly near union or freight rail company offices.

Reconfirm all freight rail services. Plan for potential disruptions when shipping cargo and consider delaying travel or finding alternative forms of transport. As a standard precaution, avoid any pickets that may materialize.
