Canada: Weather-related flight disruptions likely to affect Toronto Pearson International Airport through at least late Aug. 17

Severe weather causes flight disruptions at Toronto Pearson International Airport serving Toronto, Canada, Aug. 17; road closure reported.

Warning

Flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, will likely affect Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) through at least late Aug. 17 due to severe weather impacting the Toronto area. As of around 15:00, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had reported that a ground stop was slated to remain in effect at YYZ until at least 16:00 due to thunderstorms. YYZ has reported numerous flight delays on Aug. 17, affecting both arriving and departing flights.

Additionally, authorities at YYZ have reported that heavy rainfall and consequent flooding prompted police to close nearby Convair Drive between Renforth Road and Britannia Road East. There were no immediate reports of flooding at the airport. YYZ officials added that, as of around 14:15, a collision had prompted authorities to block "all lanes to exit the airport roadways to the 427 [highway]," and that police were diverting affected traffic. Authorities did not immediately specify when the lanes would reopen.

Residual flight disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve as airlines work to clear any passenger backlogs that have materialized.

Confirm flight schedules and allow additional time to reach the airport if booked to fly via YYZ. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel as necessary.
