Colombia: Demonstrations planned in multiple urban centers Aug. 7
Pro-government demonstrations planned in multiple locations across Colombia Aug. 7. Transport disruptions, counterprotests likely.
Activists affiliated with multiple organizations, including Central Union of Workers (Central Unitaria de Trabajadores, CUT), plan to gather in several cities on Aug. 7 to commemorate the two-year anniversary of President Gustavo Petro's administration. The main demonstration will take place in Bogota, where protesters will gather from 09:00 at Parque Nacional before marching to Plaza de Bolivar.
Other confirmed gatherings include:
Barranquilla: March from Plaza de la Paz to Parque los Andes from 08:30.
Cartagena: March from Coliseo de Combate to Parque de la Virgencita from 08:00.
Manizales: Demonstration at Palacio Nacional from 11:00.
Medellin: March from El Calvario Campo Valdes Church to Parque de la Resistencia from 09:00.
Popayan: Demonstration at the La Chirimia Monument from 09:00.
Protesters opposing Petro's administration may also gather on Aug. 7; activists confirmed plans to demonstrate against the government in Medellin at Plazoleta de la Alpujarra from 10:30.
Additional demonstrations in support of or against the government are also likely to occur in other cities across Colombia. Heightened security and associated transport disruptions are likely around protest areas. Clashes between protesters and counter-protesters are possible.
Avoid all demonstrations and protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if traveling near demonstration and protest sites on Aug. 7. Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any security disturbance.
